Stop 8: Tram Terminus Hills Street

Half Moon Lane

Half Moon Lane was originally called Bailiff Chare. In 1720 an inn called the Half Moon stood at the junction with High Street. The name of the inn was applied to the whole street about 1784 as a result of a dispute between the then landlord and the sculptor and mason Isaac Jopling who lived there and proposed to call the street Marble Street. For a few years, the street was referred to by all three names!
