Stop 7: Swinburne Street
19 West Street
The Post Office was built in 1897 on the site of this house where Thomas Bewick lived for the last 18 years of his life. He was originally sent to Gateshead to live at Carr Hill for health reasons but later moved to this house at 19 West Street. When 19 West Street was built there were very few buildings nearby and views from the house were fairly panoramic – Thomas Bewick was able to see the church steeple at Ryton!
