Police and County Courts, Swinburne Street/West Street

The Police and County Courts were housed in the Town Hall from its opening in 1870. The police department included 4 cells and a large day cell, charge room, search room, weights and measures office, superintendent’s office and fire engine house. There was also a stone stair leading directly into the dock in the court above.

The police cells were described as ‘perfectly lighted and ventilated. The warming can be regulated to any temperature, and being cleanly whitened out, they present as comfortable an appearance as it is desirable that such places should.
