Stop 6: Nelson Street
East Street
This was originally just a back lane before being given its name. In July 1858, masons working on a house in East Street discovered a skeleton under some flagstones in a cellar . It had lain there for some years and it was not possible to say if it was a man or a woman, although if a woman she must have been ‘big and strong’. Apparently, the house had frequently been unoccupied giving ample scope for the hiding of a body.
