It's the Shades...
It's the Shades...
You can't begin to imagine how agonising it proved to come up with the above section title. Finally we settled for Blues Music Matters partially borrowed from an existing publication and other related material is on loan from our friends at 'Red Lick' the Blues mail order company. So we have us a handle!

So now let's sort out the playing field and the goal posts. It's the basic intention to try an achieve two things.

Firstly to cater for the absolute novice or beginner to the world of Blues. Somebody whose introduction to the Blues has possibly been brought about by hearing the likes of Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Ry Cooder, Eric Bibb etc. Also to cater for the time-served Blues buffs who go back longer than they care to or can possibly even remember!

The second primary aim is to keep the Blues 'net' as wide as possible - as hinted at with 'other related material'. Blues collectively is a whole lot more than 'Woke up dis mornin' - twelve bar blues only and slash your wrist time. Blues you have to remember started out in some areas as a kind of pop music with Black race records. To this day Blues in its widest sense either includes or at least borders on many different types of music - Rhythm 'n' Blues, Gospel, Soul, Doo Wop, Jump Jive, Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, Hillbilly, Western Swing, Jazz, Cajun, Zydeco etc, etc. Quite apart from all the different types and styles within Blues itself, Delta, Piedmont, Chicago, West Coast, etc. So keeping the 'net' wide we shouldn't get bored or end up examining our own navels.

Debate will doubtless be a-plenty - not least is it really Blues?

And while we're on the subject...don't forget to check out the home of great Rockin' Roots, Country & Blues Music at the Jumpin' Hot Club www.jumpinhot.com

Geoff Marston: is a SoundGallery regular and notorious local blues/soul fiend. He has kindly agreed to moderate this section of the site. Watch out for some of Geoff's fab blues related artwork coming soon.
