’Books on Prescription’ is a national initiative which began in 2005/06. Evidence suggests that books can help with mental health problems and therefore Gateshead Libraries has worked with the NHS Primary Care Trust and mental health services in Gateshead Council, to provide a list of self-help books on topics including depression, anxiety and stress. You may have been ’prescribed’ a book by your GP or simply feel that you would benefit from using this collection - whatever your reason your local library has much to offer! Below is a small selection of the books we have on offer.
Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness: A self-help guide using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques - Gillian Butler
Very few people are fortunate enough to feel confident in all social situations, however for some it can turn into social anxiety making people sure that others are judging or criticising them. In her book Butler aims to provide advice and techniques to help reduce the fear that causes such anxiety.
The Courage to Heal - Ellen Bass and Laura Davies
’The Courage to Heal’ addresses the senstive issue of sexual abuse. Based on the experiences of hundreds of survivors and their partners this book shares the challanges and triumphs of their very personal healing processes. It offers mental, emotional & physical support to all those who are rebuilding their lives.
Overcoming Anorexia Nervosa: A self-help guide using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques - Christopher Freeman
Cognitive Behavioural Techniques, or CBT as it is more widely known, is today a common form of treatment for mental health problems such as anorexia. The ethos of the treatment is that if we alter out thinking we change our behaviour - with practical exercises this book supports the reader in beginning to tackle some of the complex contributors to Anorexia.
