The Shipley Bequest


An account of the life of Joseph Shipley and his lifelong passion for collecting pictures together with a study of the terms of the bequest by his Will which led to the foundation of the Shipley Art Gallery. The project begins in 1822, the year Joseph Shipley was born and ends in 1917, the year the Gallery was opened to the public.
