SOURCES OF INFORMATION: BRIEF SUMMARY

The sources of information which I found of most value to this particular project were the following:

1.The Shipley Bequest; a book of newspaper cuttings complied by John Oxberry, a noted local historian of the early twentieth century. This correlated nearly all the newspaper reports concerning Shipley and his bequest.

2.Dutch and Flemish 16th and 17th century paintings from the collection by C. Wright. This gave lots of information about these particular paintings together with accounts of Shipley's life and the type of paintings he bought.

3. 3.The Auction catalogue of the paintings. I was fortunate in obtaining what was probably the auctioneer's own catalogue as it gave details of all the prices the pictures realised together with the purchasers names.

4. 4.Mr. Andrew Gregg, the Curator of the Shipley Gallery who gave me his personal opinion of the Shipley pictures and allowed me to see the paintings not currently available.
