The 2010 Gateshead Children's Book Award came to a close on Thursday 1 July, at an awards ceremony in the impressive surroundings of Gateshead Old Town Hall. Children, teachers and parents all gathered together to find out who the winning author would be. Before that announcement, children from Winlaton West Lane told the audience about the longlisting process, and pupils from Dunston Riverside performed a series of sketches from their favourite book.
And then, the really exciting bit - the results. The top three places were announced in reverse order:
Joint 2nd place went to "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" by Jeff Kinney
and
"Shine On Daizy Star" by Cathy Cassidy.
And finally, the gold envelope was opened, to reveal that the winner is....
"The Boy in the Dress" by David Walliams!
Second placed author Cathy Cassidy was present at the awards evening, and spoke about her love of reading and writing, and the importance of daydreaming! She also signed books at the end of the evening.
