Varjak Paw
Author: S.F. Said

This feline tale by was the clear favourite with our schools in 2004. Varjak Paw tells the story of a Mesopotamian Blue kitten. He lives high up in an old house on a hill and has never been outside the house. No one in his family has, not since their legendary ancestor Jalal. But when the sinister Gentleman and his two black cats come to the house, Varjak must go outside into a dark and dangerous city to get help. Author S.F. Said was delighted to be awarded the prize "Wow What an honour. I am truly, truly delighted to win the Gateshead Award, especially since I've seen who I was up against. I'm really sorry that I can't be with you today, but I hope you have a fantastic time. Well done to everyone that took part and a big thank you to all the cool cats that voted for Varjak!"
