About the Award The Gateshead Children's Book Award, inaugurated in 2004, is the result of discussions between Gateshead Libraries and the Primary Literacy Team in Gateshead. The aim of the awards is to encourage not only reading but also writing and use of ICT.
Sponsorship The GCBA is sponsored by a number of publishers who kindly provided multiple copies of the shortlisted novels to participating schools. The enthusiastic support of publishers enable the awards to proceed.
Voting There are a number of other children's book awards but the winning titles are usually selected by adults! The Gateshead Children's Book Award is voted for solely by children. Children read the books, discuss them and write reviews. They allocate scores to the books and post their comments here online.
For the 2010/11 Gateshead Children's Book Award a shortlist of 12 books was voted for by a panel from Winlaton West Lane School. Ten schools will be selected to read and review the shortlist.
Voting will close at the end of March, and the winners will be announced at an award ceremony in June.
