Miriam Teasdale, MyVoice, Gateshead Central Library
I am writing this to help dispel the view that all young people are bad.
The recent media coverage of the riots in the south and elsewhere would appear to suggest that discontented young people are happy to cause havoc and mayhem, with disregard to their own communities and their future prospects.
The North East has not followed the crowd and our young people are not carelessly destroying the community that they live in, instead many of them are taking part in it and encouraging inclusion not exclusion. This is shown by the local MyVoice young people’s voluntary group based at Gateshead Central Library that is preparing events that will benefit the local community and change young people’s perceptions of the library.
Our latest ideas include:

Gig in the Garden

Gig in the Garden
This free event will take place on Friday 23rd September, doors open at 5:00pm and will finish at 7:00pm. It is open to anyone to launch the library’s brand new community garden and to encourage people to come to the library and get involved, whether it’s by joining the activity groups or becoming a regular visitor and borrower of books and CDs. This event is also aimed at making people aware of the transformation the library has undergone. It is now full of modern facilities for example the teen section that contains the latest teenage reads, new computers and a wii game console. We hope that people will come to the grand opening of the new library garden and want to keep coming back. The evening will be full of fun including live, local bands and delicious food for everyone to enjoy.

Muggle Mania
Potty about Potter? This event is to celebrate the final Harry Potter book and film, and will take place Thursday 27th October (during Half Term) 1pm-3pm (with a film screening afterwards). The aim of this event is to bring together Harry Potter fans and wish a farewell to the beloved characters that so many young people have grown up with. Our target age is 12-20years and the event will include stalls of Harry Potter memorabilia, dressing up, a competition for the most inventive new ending to the series of books and seeking out the local Harry Potter Egghead. The day will also have amazing prizes, lots of fun and magical activities all for just £2. We will finish the day with a screening of one of the Harry Potter films (it starts at 3.30pm, and is optional); there will be a poll on facebook for you to vote for which one you want to see, and a £3 ticket covering the event and the screening. We also hope that people will see how enjoyable spending time at the library can be and you do not have to be a bookworm to come along and get involved (I am a prime example.)

I hope like me that other young people will be encouraged to join in these events, and also to make a positive contribution to their local communities. Everyone should be valued and be able to make their voice heard, which in the long term has a beneficial effect for them and the area that they live in.
If you are interested in either or both of these events please contact Gateshead Central Library, or phone 0191 433 8420, or email tic@gateshead.gov.uk
Please remember tickets are limited.
Gig in the Garden is FREE but we only have 50 tickets available - book now to avoid disappointment!
Muggle Mania costs £2 for the event, or £3 to include the film screening. We have enough tickets for 150 people, so please if you are interested do not hesitate to get in touch.
On behalf of MyVoice, we all look forward to seeing you at our events and celebrating everything that is great about the North East.
