The service is free. All you need is your Gateshead Libraries ticket and PIN. (If you do not know your PIN, please contact your local library). You can download up to 4 books for a maximum period of 21 days.

E-books are automatically deleted from your e-reader at the end of the loan period so you don’t need to worry about overdue fees.

E-books are compatible with most e-readers. However, the service is not compatible with Amazon’s Kindle. This is because Amazon do not support digital rights management (DRM) on e-books which is required by publishers who sell their books to libraries. This is a problem currently faced by all library authorities in the UK.

To start downloading, click HERE

Wed, 16 May 2012 15:33:00 +0000 http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/books-to-download Twitter @GatesheadLibs http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/twitter-gatesheadlibs-

Gateshead Libraries is now on Twitter @GatesheadLibs.

Follow us to be the first to hear the latest news, events information and much more!

Fri, 11 May 2012 10:30:00 +0000 http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/twitter-gatesheadlibs- We need your email address, please http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/we-need-your-email-address-please

Please use our online form to provide us with your email address, it will help us to keep you informed. They felt his books really engaged reluctant readers and his session was a real inspiration for the children involved. This prompted staff to use the author and his work as a theme for their regular Chatterbooks reading group.

The Chatterbooks group were really excited to hear that staff had met a ‘football author’ in person and had a signed copy of one of his books to give as a prize during their session. From this point on things got very competitive!

The children were asked to do some research about Tom and his books prior to the session and had fun breaking into teams to design a poster displaying their interesting facts.

Following the presentations the children formulated questions to send to Tom himself via his website and were over the moon when Tom responded.

Follow the link below to Tom Palmer’s website to read the children’s questions and see the full article:

http://www.tompalmer.co.uk/documents/CHATTERBOOKS-ARTICLE.pdf

Tue, 24 Apr 2012 08:49:00 +0000 http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/chatterbooks-chatter-with-author-tom-palmer Titanic at Gateshead Central Library http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/titanic-at-gateshead-central-library

140 people came to Central library to hear The History Wardrobes unique account of the voyage of the Titanic.

This fabulous presentation followed the story of famous dress designer Lady Lucy Duff-Gordon and her husband Cosmo as they sailed as first class passengers on the Titanic on that fateful night. The characters were expertly played by Lucy Adlington & Gary Goldthorpe from the History Wardrobe who interspersed their character roles with testimonies from other survivors. This really was a hands on experience. We were shown passenger cards, posters, and menus which were copies of originals and Lucy wore gowns recreated from the Edwardian period along with some original accessories. She talked us through the day wear and evening wear of Edwardian society – even stripping down to her beautiful Edwardian underwear at one point! This was a captivating glimpse of life on board the Titanic as we were told how daily life might have been for the passengers, felt the rising panic as the waters closed in and learnt how the aftermath of the tragedy affected its survivors. A very moving presentation yet told in such an engaging way by these expert historians.

If you have never seen a history wardrobe presentation it is one to look out for. Each talk is unique and being allowed to handle memorabilia from bygone periods makes it even more memorable. Lucy’s collections of period costumes are truly amazing and her vast knowledge of the history behind each piece makes this an experience you won’t forget.

Thu, 19 Apr 2012 14:48:00 +0000 http://www.asaplive.com/news/news/titanic-at-gateshead-central-library
