The History of Low Fell

By M. HOPE DODDS

(With updated information by Sid Atkinson, Chairman of Gateshead and District Local History Society)

This short history of Low Fell was written by Hope Dodds in 1965/1966 but never published. The updating of the text in 1999 for this publication has been carried out by Sid Atkinson. His contribution can be distinguished by the italic print. Hope's original manuscript remains unaltered from the way she wrote it.

Madeleine Hope Dodds was the daughter of Edwin and Emily Bryham Dodds. She had an older sister, Mary Muriel (Molly), two younger sisters Ruth and Sylvia and one brother, Brian. Hope was educated at Newnham College, Cambridge before women could obtain degrees. She never married and lived all her life in the family home, Home House, Kell's Lane, Low Fell.
